My Experience as a Webby Awards Judge: A Front Row Seat to Digital Innovation

Erin Lentz, ArtVersion's Executive Director of Design

After years of crafting digital experiences and honing my skills in web design, I thought I had seen it all. As Executive Director of Design, my work has taken me across the spectrum of the digital world, from intricate user interfaces to brand-defining websites. But one morning, as I was sifting through my emails, I stumbled upon something that made me pause—a personal invitation to join the Webby Awards judging panel for The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS). Me? Judging for the highest honor on the Internet? It felt surreal! That email made me stop and reflect on my journey, from my early days in design to contributing to the recognition of the most innovative work on the web. Allow me to share this incredible experience with you.

Behind the Scenes of Judging

So here’s the deal – being part of IADAS isn’t just about adding a fancy title in your LinkedIn bio (though ngl, it looks pretty sweet). You’re actually diving deep into some of the coolest digital work out there. No pressure, right? The Webby Awards has been a crown jewel of internet honors for almost three decades. It all started in 1996, when Tiffany Shlain, Spencer Ante and Maya Draisin founded The Webby Awards, and in 1998 Academy was established. Many big names in the industry are part of the Academy including Kevin Spacey, Grimes, Richard Branson,Questlove, Internet inventor Vint Cerf, Instagram’s Head of Fashion Partnerships Eva Chen, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, Twitter founder Biz Stone, Tumblr’s David Karp, Director of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society Susan P. Crawford, just to name a few. To be part of this crew is a big deal to me. Thank you Webbys.

The Whole ‘Judge’ Thing is Actually Pretty Intense

Let me spill the tea on what it’s actually like to judge the Webbys. First off, the amount of incredible work I got to see was mind-blowing. We’re talking next-level websites, apps that make you go “how did they even do that?”, and social media campaigns that had me taking notes for my own work. Each entry represents countless hours of creative effort, technical innovation, and passionate dedication from talented teams from around the world. As I reviewed submissions, I felt the responsibility to give each entry the thorough consideration it deserved. The evaluation process was comprehensive and eye-opening. What struck me most was the incredible diversity of submissions – from cutting-edge websites and innovative apps to groundbreaking social media campaigns. Each entry was evaluated on multiple criteria, ensuring a fair and thorough assessment of its merits.

The Cool Stuff I Noticed

After spending way too many hours reviewing entries, I started seeing some pretty interesting patterns. This unique vantage point allowed me to observe emerging trends in digital design and web development:

  • Immersive experiences that make you forget you’re staring at a screen
  • Websites and apps that are actually usable by everyone (finally!)
  • AI stuff that doesn’t feel like robots trying to take over
  • Digital projects that actually care about the Internet and making a difference on the web

Looking Forward (and it’s Pretty Exciting)

Seeing all these amazing projects has me hyped about where the Internet is heading. At ArtVersion, my team has also been at the forefront of the Internet’s evolution. We are very familiar with what it takes to balance technology with design. To create emotional resonant websites, to create user friendly interfaces that are run on the modern tech stack and to blend seamlessly the latest coding standards in to something that users would actually enjoy. I’m pleased to see that the industry adopted the fact that it’s not just about making things look pretty (though that definitely helps). The future is all about creating digital experiences that actually mean something.

How This Changed My Game

As our industry continues to evolve, the Webby Awards plays a crucial role in recognizing and celebrating the innovations that shape our digital future. Not gonna lie, being a judge has also changed how I look at digital work.  It’s inspired me to think more boldly about our own projects and encouraged me to push boundaries even further. I’m definitely bringing these new trends into our projects.

The Whole Experience = Mind Blown

Being a Webby judge wasn’t just a cool addition to my bio – it was honestly one of the most immersive experiences of my career. It reminded me why I fell in love with digital design in the first place and got me excited about what’s coming next. All of this reinforced my belief in the power of digital to connect, inspire, and transform.

Final Thoughts (I Promise)

To everyone out there making cool stuff on the Internet: you’re crushing it! Whether you’re coding until 3 AM, perfecting that UI design, or trying to figure out why your JavaScript is broken (we’ve all been there), know that your work matters. And to wrap this up – massive thanks to the Webby Awards for letting me be part of this. It’s been real, and I’m still kind of geeking out about the whole thing. Can’t wait for next year!
