Here is the text for Episode 6 with some added ad-libbing.

Welcome to re-discover your brand podcast episode #6 brought to you by ArtVersion interactive.   I’m your host Kip Russell and today we are discussing Twitter vs. Linkedin and the board room vs. The bar. Which is better for finding new business and why.

When I consult many corporate professionals and businesses on networking on line they all only talk about LinkedIn.  I agree with them that LinkedIn is a great tool for networking. It allows you to target key people in a business that you want to engage with and creates an opportunity to contact them.  It’s even more powerful if you get the paid service.

The problem with LinkedIn is that it makes you feel like a starving artist trying to storm a corporate meeting to get their demo heard.  It still feels like there are too many gatekeepers, walls to climb, it feels stiff and hard to break through the ice, and like the starving artist if you say something wrong or catch someone on a bad day they throw you out.

We all know that the best business is done on the golf course at the bar or in a setting more relaxed than the corporate boardroom. That’s why I tell my executives to get on Twitter.

Twitter is where you find the same VP’s, Label heads, CEO’s except on Twitter except now they are in the bar, tie un-tucked having beer and mingling.  All you have to do is strike a conversation. Twitter in my opinion is the single most important place to be for any business professional.  Not only can you grow your own personal brand on Twitter unlike any other network but you can build relationships with people on a much higher level.  We all know in business relationships are everything.

But what separates Twitter from all other networks and makes it my crown jewel in social media is search.twitter.com
and the ability to listen. I’ll go into more detail on this in my next blog

In the last blog, I talked about Twitter vs. Linkedin and why I like Twitter better as a networking tool.  I ended that blog by stating that search.twitter.com and listening are why Twitter is my crown jewel in social networking for businesses.

Most businesses use Twitter as a broadcast channel like TV, radio, or print. They blast their messages out to their followers without any real engagement.  Twitter is best used by any sized company as a two way street of listening and engaging with your consumer.  The problem is most people aren’t educated enough on how to use this tool and that’s what social media is a “tool” to market, engage, find new business, promote, pr, and more.

Imagine if you could search every conversation being said every day by everyone in the world. And every time your brand is mentioned you could say hi or share a coupon. Wouldn’t that be game-changing? Well now with the creation of Twitter you can search 100,000,000+ conversations about things related to your brand and start listening and engaging. It’s ridiculous. Does your company build cars, are you a dentist start listening and engaging. Not selling, talking! Answer questions, point people in the right direction become a service or a platform for your field of expertise, and with that comes many added benefits. The opportunities are endless. The tactics are numerous it’s about being creative, authentic, and providing a service.

If you’re trying to get in business with Bob Evans start engaging and searching for employees on Twitter and be real and approach them. Maybe talk with them for a few weeks build a relationship on Twitter and then ask to connect with them on the phone or via email. It’s as simple as saying Hi on Twitter.

I’m not making up all these examples I used above. I have used in my own businesses with clients or my own business as a social media consultant. If you need to learn how to use the tool of Twitter, Linkedin, Facebook, and more contact our company ArtVersion or a company near you and begin using these tools to effectively grow your business.
